Santarosaite
Sanromanite
Tucson Show Update - New Chilean Minerals.
Georg Gebhard had two minerals at Tucson in Casey Jones' booth that were not yet IMA approved and had labels with formulas: Santarosaite - (Cu,Pb)B2O4. Sanromanite - Na2CuPb3(CO3)5.  I was contacted by Dr. Jochen Schlueter indicating that these are still under investigation.  It is my job to look for new minerals at large shows like the Tucson Show and these were presented to collectors and dealers alike by Georg as new minerals.  All credit for premature release of these names should be directed to Georg Gebhard for this error of protocol. The images on the left are two of the specimens I purchased from Georg.

Arsenopyrite - Mexico

Elbaite - Pala, California

Crocoite - Australia
February 12th - Barbara Cureton TN specimens & others
Here are small sampling of specimens from the Barbara Cureton thumbnail collection. I will be posting more of these in the future.  Most of these specimens were from Willard Perkins and Scott Williams.

Apatite

Grossular

Astrophyllite
February 12th - Canadian Minerals
This year the theme of the show is Canadian Minerals.  Hence, a visit with Rod and Helen Tyson was in order.  I found a fine array of diverse specimens including pieces from Mont St. Hilaire and the Yukon phosphate deposits.  There are other items as well rounding out this interesting group.

Fluorite
February 12th - Canadian Fluorite - New Find
Frank Melanson was responsible for finding some very attractive specimens of fluorite from a new locality on Highway #7 in Ontario, Canada.  These specimens have deep blue cores and lime green outer color zones.  In incandescent light the cores appear violet but in sunlight they are deep indigo blue.  Only a scant few of these were recovered on matrix hence the majority are all fluorite.  The bottom of these specimens have matrix contacts but the pieces I selected were free of damage except where noted.  Rod & Helen Tyson also had some of these that they obtained from Frank.

Barite Scepters
February 12th - French Scepter Barite crystals
While in Hawthorneden's booth I was visiting with Le Regne Mineral editor Louis Dominique Bayle.  he pointed out his surprise at seeing a flat of barite from France.  He said he'd not seen so many of these in one place in many years - even in France!  Frank Melanson chimed in that these were from an old stash in his inventory that he'd had for over 30 years.  This show has been weak on new finds sothis made sense to me to go after.  I selected the best eight specimens Frank and Wendy had - all miniatures and all with scepters.

Pyrite
February 12th - Peruvian Sulfides
I scoured the Tucson venues and came up with a very attractive hoard of mostly pyrite specimens.  There is one TN specimen of tetrahedrite that is an exceptional example of this common ore mineral. Lots of Pyrite specimens from small miniatures to large cabinet sizes.

Liddicoatite
February 12th - Liddicoatite - New Find
I met up with an Italian dealer who had specimens of liddicoatite from a new find in Madagascar.  These crystals have brilliant luster and when viewed down the c axis display the triangular patterns these tourmalines are famous for.

Andradite & Epidote
February 12th - Peruvian Andradite - New Find
Luis Miguel Fernandez had new specimens of andradite from Peru. These are from Rio Seco, Quebrada de Cordoba, ICA, Peru.  They are a pleasant brown color and are typically associated with quartz and/or epidote.

Anatase

Morganite

Ilmenite
February 5th - New Minerals from Pakistan & Afghanistan -
A Few New Finds
Francois Lietard and Dudley Blauwet travel frequently to Pakistans in pursuit of fine minerals and new material. Both had some interesting new specimens from recent finds which you will find on these pages.  The three on the left are a small sampling of this group.

Included Apatite
February 5th - Actinolite included Apatite - New Find
French Dealer Francois Lietard had a new find of apatite from Bonan, Warsek, NW Frontier Province in Pakistan.   The typical specimen is lustrous, a light violet color to colorless and most have varying inclusions of acicular actinolite.

Powellite on Scolecite

Pyromorphite - Germany

Fluorite - Illinois
February 4th - General Tucson Show Specimens
All sorts of things to consider in this group from Copper to Phosphophyllite and a lot more! Three from the group just posted.

Amethyst
February 4th - Mexican Amethyst
Dennis Beals of XTAL had a tremendous supply of very fine amethyst specimens from Las Vigas, Mexico. This is the best material he's had in a number of years and it did not take long for the word to get out about them.  I picked up a group of specimens including several with laumontite associations.o

Ferro-Tapiolite

Microlite
February 4th - Brazilian Rarities - New Find
Luis Menezes had some interesting rarities including new finds of two minerals - Microlite from  ....  and also a new find of ferro-tapiolite  which is a polymorph of with ferro-tantalite.  The crystals are jet black and exposed from albite/quartz matrix.  The crystals come from Parelhas, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.  I picked up five specimens in all from this new find.

Elbaite - Pala
February 3rd - Tourmaline from Pala!
Tourmaline from the famous Pala District of San Diego County, California!
I was approached by another dealer who has been holding these large crystals for decades.  I have not seen this many large Pala pieces - especially from the Tourmaline Queen mine - in a very long time.  The crystals were mined in 1975 about 3 years after the famous Blue Cap find which was made in 1972.  The color of these specimens is as rich a lilac color as there is in the mineral kingdom.

Sperrylite on Chalcopyrite
February 3rd - Sperrylite
KARP had a number of fine specimens of sperrylite available at the start of the show.  I felt quite happy to be able to plow through Ivo's stock as he was unpacking specimens.  These items are a labor of love as to expose the crystals, which are always encased in chalcopyrite, you must use an air abrader which is time consuming and tedious work.  All it takes is one slip and a beautiful lustrous crystal of sperrylite becomes platinum ore just like that.  Sperrylite is comprised of platinum and arsenic.  It's chemical formula is PtAs2.

Aquamarine & Fluorite

Fluorite
February 3rd - Fluorite & Others
Two French dealers - The Gobin brothers and Francois Lietard - had specimens of deep emerald green fluorite from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia.  Several specimens had a rare aquamarine association.

Vesuvianite & Grossular

Vesuvianite
January 30th - Chinese Vesuvianite & Grossular
I have seen several dealers with these root beer colored vesuvianite crystals.  The vast majority occur as free crystal though a few have been seen on matrix.  Damage is prevalent with all of these loose crystals and is to be expected according to Guangua Liu of AAA Minerals.  Guangua also mentioned that these were all found about 10 years ago and only in the last year or two have started coming out.  I was happy to locate some fine specimens with large grossular crystals of a rich amber to honey color associated with several of these.  These are not a new find per se as I did see these at the Munich Show last November but they are finally here in number this year at Tucson.

Crystallized Gold
January 30th - Eagle's Nest Gold
As soon as I could I went to see Wayne Leicht so that I could plunder his gold inventory from the Eagle's Nest mine in Placer County, California.  Wayne said production was light this year but he did have a few better larger pieces which I decided to obtain.

Apatite on Microcline

Blue Cap Tourmaline

January 28th - Sapo Mine Minerals
At the Munich Show this past fall and the Munich Show before Luis Menezes had some specimens of apatite on feldspar from the Sapo mine made famous for its blue cap tourmalines.   At the show this past fall these were being touted as possibly a new species (carbonate apatite) due to a high carbon content in the analyses that were done.  It turns out, according to Luis, that the early analyses used only the outer sections of the specimens which were heavily oiled to enhance the appearance of specimens.  Alas, the carbon detected was due to the oil that was liberally applied to these things that I saw in Munich - that was the main reason I passed on getting any then.  Luis worked out a scheme to clean these that revealed the luster without using oil.  So, I picked up a small batch.  I also came across two decent blue cap toumalines from this mine which are now next to impossible get  a hold of.  Hence, a mini Sapo Mine suite.

Sphalerite on Galena
January 28th - Russian Minerals
This is just a small group of three minerals from the Dal'Negorsk area of far eastern Russia.  I picked these up from KARP minerals at the Clarion - all three quite unique for the mine.

Fluorite
January 28th - Blue Chinese Fluorite - New Find
As with any show these days there are literally tons of Chinese fluorite to look at.  This year's Tucson Show edition is no different.  I did find this small group of four specimens, however, at the Smuggler's Inn and got all four.  There are very reminiscent of Le Burq fluorite from France with the deep inky blue color.

Fluorite on Dolomite

Fluorite on Quartz
January 25th - New Chinese Minerals - Part 1
This is the first of two groups of specimens from China that have been obtained recently. Realgar, fluorite, apatite and more are here.

Apatite on Quartz

Fluorite on Quartz
January 25th - New Chinese Minerals - Part 2
This is the second of two groups of specimens from China that have been obtained recently.

Karpatite on Quartz

Under SW UV light
January 15th - NEW FIND! - Karpatite
There was a recent find of the rare organic mineral karpatite (C24H12) found in San Benito County, California.  The find was made by members of the Bay Area Mineralogical Society. I was pleased to be contacted by this group to see if I wanted to offer any of these specimens.  Karpatite has been known from San Benito at several localities for many many years.  This group is quite exceptional with bright fluorescent yellow, flat lying crystals on jasperoid matrix with minor cinnabar in the matrix.  Karpatite is also very brightly fluorescent under SW UV light.

Gold leaf

Electrum - cubes
January 15th - New Gold specimens from Nevada

Round Mountain - The Round Mountain mine continues to crank out exceptional specimens of native gold.  This group here is from the sale this past December in Tonopah. You can expect to see more gold coming out of this mine for a few more years at least! There is one specimen of electrum in this batch with some exceptionally well formed cubes.
