February 3-5

The anticipated Westward Look show opened the 3rd to a record crowd.  It seems that a lot of collectors were waiting for this day to arrive.

You can't miss the sign to the entrance of the Westward Look Resort off Ina Boulevard.

Over looking where most of the rooms are.
Parking was not so easy the first day.

The walkway in front of the rooms.

A view in one of the rooms which I can't recall. That is Si and Ann Frazier
in the center and Herb Obodda reaching into the candy jar for some chocolate.

As with the rest of the Tucson Show there has been nothing of exceptional note that is new to the mineral world but at this show there were some truly incredible rocks to be seen.  Ed Rosenzweig of Edward's Fine Minerals had a new find of chrome diopsides from Tanzania.  Very rich lime green color and most were gem quality.

The new gem chrome diopsides from Tanzania.  The crystal on the right is about 2.5 cm in length.

Scott Werschkey has what is easily the finest array of gold specimens ever seen in one place outside of Tonopah of Round Mountain gold.  Specimens in all sizes from thumbnails to large grapefruits.

Two of the exceptional specimens in Scott's display.  The piece on the left is easily over
one troy pound in size.  The leaf on the right with sharp crystals is about 5-6 cm in length.

This is a large spinel law twin but there are so many crystal faces and forms
on this specimen it is hard to tell.  It weighs several ounces and is all gold!

The Gobin brothers also had some screamer aquamarines from Pakistan.  Exceptional quality and color for beryl!

The specimen on the right is stunning with a 12 cm or so crystal of glassy aquamarine
set perfectly on feldspar matrix. The photo on the right is a collective shot of the hoard.

Kevin Ward had this monstrous bar of silver recovered from a sunken Spanish Galleon.
I think he said it weighs 30 kilos or so! That is about 935 troy ounces of silver!!

In Bill Larson and Alain Martaud's room I found two specimens to take with me.  A rare matrix cumengite specimen from Baja California, Mexico and one of the finest Bou Azzer, Morocco scorodite specimens I have ever seen.  I bought both and caught a quick photo opportunity with Bill Larson chatting it up with Ken Roberts.

This specimen is 10 x 6.5 cm and has numerous sixlings to 0.5 cm across.  This specimen is available for $1250.00

This specimen is 14 x 8 cm and has abundant crystals to 1.1 cm across. This specimen is available for $1850.00 (Now Sold)

While at the Westward Look I ran into Tsumeb collector extraordinaire Marshall Sussman.  Marshall and Charlotte are now situated 1/2 the year here in Tucson is a spectacular home in Oro Valley north of Tucson.  Marshall suggested it would be worth my while to come over for a visit so we arranged a time to meet and see what was in his store room.

The first rock I found that said yes to me was this remarkable specimen of cuprian adamite from Tsumeb.

This eye popper is 6.5 cm across and has numerous crystals to 0.8 cm across.  It is available for $2250.00 (Now Sold)

Then to my surprise he pulled out 8-9 flats of Kalahari material.  It was the John Schneider Kalahari collection. John has been a noteworthy collector for quite some time now and has built a very fine Tsumeb collection - easily one of the top private collections in the United States.  Before switching to exclusively Tsumeb John built this fine Kalahari assemblage.  Lots of variety and quality in this 80 or so piece collection.  There was NOTHING of this quality and quantity available from anyone at the show either here in Tucson or at Munich last fall.  So, it took a matter of seconds for me to say ok.  These will be available later this spring after my return from the Bologna Show in Italy and subsequent trip to Turkey in March.   Here are a few teasers - admittedly some of the best pieces -  from the collection but by no means all of the best pieces!

This is the inesite from the Barlow Collection.  It is 5 cm in height
and as red as inesite can get from anywhere!!!

This is stunning piece of manganese carbonate from the N'Chwaning mine.
It stands about 4 cm in height.

This is an odd but exceptional 6.5 x 4.5 cm rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning 1 Mine.
It was also featured in the Mineralogical Record in volume 9 # 3 on page 144.

This is a classic from the N'Chwaning that is 5.7 cm across.

This is a faceted gem rhodochrosite from N'Chwaning.  It weighs 8+ carats and is 1.3 cm in diameter.

Look for them most likely around late April.

More to come from the 2006 Tucson Show.
