February 6-8

A quick note about an item published earlier:
There was mention made of some new realgar specimens from Romania in the first report.  I pulled mention of them after it was apparent to me that there was a lot of controversy surrounding them.  I have received notes from respected dealers in Europe who have seen the mine where these came from and validated the existence of realgar from the mine.  Below is an example of this new material that was presented here in Tucson.

Several dealers had these here in Tucson including the Gobins, Chris Wright and Luis Miguel Fernandez.

On Feb 6 & 7 Steve Perry and I held a small show in my apartment out here at the base of the Catalina Mountains in the northern Tucson area. We had no idea what to expect but had a couple of days to squander before the main show set up day.  So it was quite surprising to us to have close to 100 people venture out and visit us.

We had numerous flats of wholesale material available including some benitoite mine and Tsumeb specimens.

Our better material was on this table and the kitchen counter top.

We were not prepared for how much money we made! ;^)
That's actually Steve's laundry and I don't mean money laundering...

It was actually quite a bit of fun.  We were able to visit with just about everyone who came in the relaxed atmosphere. We definitely intend to do it again next year but probably in a venue a bit closer to town.

The day before set up day at the main show I was quite pleased to visit with Canadian dealers Rod & Helen Tyson.  This year the theme for the show is Canadian Minerals so this was very timely. Rod & Helen have always got some interesting material available and work hard to get new things ready for the Tucson Show.   It was a good visit and also a good opportunity to obtain some very fine Canadian material for an update.  Rod has been very busy in the Yukon mining phosphates and the gormanite he has this year is unbeatable. They had many fine specimens of wardite, gormanite, lazulite and others from there.

Here is a lustrous, 1.5 cm crystal of wardite.

This is a 2.9 cm specimen of gormanite with small bluish brazilianite crystals.

They also had some other fine Canadian specimens including minerals from the Nanisivik mine in the North West Territories and gemmy apatite crystals on calcite matrix from Wilberforce.  There were quite a few exceptional items from Mont Saint Hilare including some gem green sphalerite.

This is a 3.2 cm specimen of gemmy green sphalerite from Mont Saint Hilaire.

This is a 4 cm specimen that Rod etched.  The astrophyllite is encased
in analcime which is removed by immersion in an acid bath. This is
from Mont Saint Hilaire.

Lastly they had some very attractive specimens of fluorite from a new find in Ontario made by Frank Melanson of Hawthorneden Minerals.  These are from a road cut on Highway 7  near Marmora in Ontario.  I saw some that Frank had during set up day at the main show and it appears that Rod and Helen high graded the best of the find.  It is one of the more exciting new things here in Tucson this year.  Rod and Frank both explained to me that this locality is now illegal to collect from since it is in the highway right of way.  Pity as the play of colors is exceptional

This is a 4.7 x 3 cm specimen and one of the best from the new find.

On to set up day at the main show.

I got there about noon and about half the dealers were already busy at work getting specimens unpacked and set out.  The following are some pictures of some of the dealers and some interesting rocks.

Here is French dealer Christophe Gobin putting the final touches on his display.

Christophe and Brice Gobin had a gorgeous tourmaline specimen from Afghanistan (now sold).
The piece is about 30 cm from one end to the other.

Here's Tucson dealer Dave Douglass opening flat after flat.  Dave is leading
a mineral tour to Brazil later this July which I will be attending. If interested
you can follow the link to get his contact information.

This is the Collector's Edge booth.  Steve "the blur" Behling is moving rapidly to get the place in shape!

Despite rumors to the contrary Isaias Casanova has an exceptionally good eye for the interesting.
He pointed out this odd bournonite specimen from China in Dan Weinrich's booth.

This is Brian Kosnar's booth.  Brian is in the center. Tom Moore, author of What's New for the Mineralogical Record
is busy scribing away and on the far right is webmaster Jolyon Ralph who manages the very useful Mindat.Org website.

This is a shot of collector Jerry Rosenthal.  Jerry is putting in a case this year of some of his collection.
It is a fabulous collection which I will have some photos of for the last Tucson Show installment.  Jerry, who lives
in Santa Cruz, California has put his collection together largely with the help of Andy Seibel and John Seibel.

This is a very striking specimen of a nail head calcite coated with amethyst from Artigas, Uruguay.
Leonard Himes had this piece (now sold). He had one similar piece to this one which I picked up for
the last Tucson Show update.

More to come from the 2006 Tucson Show.
