The Offical Munich Show Website

The final day was frenzied at the show.  Hall 4 was literally packed all day with thousands of people scanning the jewelry part of the show.  The other two halls were equally busy with people looking for the last minute bargains.  I am guilty as charged.

The scene in Hall A6 around noon.

In Hall 5 German dealer Uli Burchard had some totally wild specimens of slightly cuprous aragonite with two habits.  The specimens have stalactitic stems which transition into a spray of sorts.  I termed them the "Don King" aragonites.  These are from the Sioux Ajax mine in Juab County, Utah.  He had four so I picked up all of them.

Here are two of the aragonite specimens Uli had.

Here's Uli (left) with Ernie Schlichter in Uli's booth.

Uli also had specimens of pink calcite with these extraordinarily thin crystals of stibnite from a new find in Nandan, Guangxi, China.

Elsewhere in Hall 5 I found Ernesto Ossola.  Ernesto has recently moved to Tucson and is excited with his future there.   Anyway, he had some fine specimens of scorodite from Ahgbar, Morocco that have extraordinary color change properties more akin to alexandrite.  Indoors the color is deep red and outside it is green.  I found a nice selection and enjoyed a glass of red wine with Ernesto made by a Spanish farmer. I love this show!

Here's Ernesto in his booth area.

Here's one of the scorodites under room lighting.

Here's the same part of the specimen shot under cloudy skies (left) and room light (right).

In Hall 4 I was looking for a place to spend the last of my Euros and I found German dealer Peter Wittur. Peter had some, now quite rare, specimens of the curly malachite from Bixlegg, Austria. He had two that were pretty decent so I bought them. He informed me that this locality is impossible to collect at further so I was happy to get them.

Here's one of the two curly malachite specimens I obtained. This one has two curly zones in an exposed vug in quartz.

This is a picture of Peter in his booth area.

As I mentioned earlier the theme this year is China.  There was an elaborate display in Hall 6 with minerals, carvings and fossils on display.

Here's one of several entrances to the Chinese display area.

Inside the Chinese area was this garden space complete with pond and live gold fish!

The minerals were under the constant scrutiny of visitors!

Here are two specimens that caught my eye - a very fine mimetite from
the Pingtouning mine and remarkable calcite from Yaogangxian.

In the fossil section I saw this ancient bird fossil with an illustration of what it was supposed to look like,

In the museum display section I saw this superb 6 cm specimen of
native silver with cubic crystals from Kongsberg, Norway.

The crowds were still strong at 3:00 pm in Hall A4.

They were even stronger at the Bier Booth in Hall A4.

In Hall A4 there were quite a few displays also.  One presented by Eric Asselborn was remarkable with its presentation of rare alpine minerals.

A very fine milarite specimen - one of the best I have ever seen!

And that will do it.  The 2004 Munich show was well attended though the feeling of most dealers is that attendance was down a bit.  There were lots of new minerals here and outstanding minerals from worldwide locations as well. Despite the fact that the exchange rate between the US Dollar and Euro was horrible I was still able to shake a few good deals out here.  There were also numerous opportunities to visit with old friends and opportunities make new acquaintances.

The show theme for next year!

Special thanks again to show organizer Johannes Keilmann and his staff for putting on an outstanding show.  The attention to details was remarkable and the design of the special display area and show in general are equaled by no other show in the world.Without a doubt I will be back here again next year.

Auf Wiedersehen,
