report 2

I spent my first day at the show October 27th.  Today was set up day and it is amazing how much work gets done on a day like this.  The organization level is unsurpassed by any show in the world. There are three enormous halls - each larger than the main show at Tucson - that go from empty to filled with partitions, tables, display cases, minerals and people in less than 2 days.  It is a tribute to the show organizer Johannes Keilmann and his very large paid and volunteer staff.

A brief word about the state of things here.  Right now it is brutal for those of us who have US dollars.  It takes $1.28 to buy one Euro. Gasoline prices here are the same as they've been for quite some time - in the $4.50 per gallon realm. So, it is apparent that the price hikes we've seen for gasoline in the US are due to the erosion of the value of the dollar more than anything else despite what we hear in the media back home.   Another way of putting it is that there's been an enormous transfer of wealth from the United States to Europe in the past four years from $0.88 for 1 Euro in 2001 to $1.28 for 1 Euro in 2004. A bit more than 45% to be exact of the wealth from the USA to Europe from a global perspective since 2000.  Ouch! Those of us here from the US - much fewer than recent years - are feeling the pain.  Hence, prices for minerals in dollars are very high.  Talk of the US Presidential election is everywhere here also. There's not much love for George Bush in this part of the world.

Not much to choose from yet...

Back to minerals! This year the show theme is Minerals from China.  Needless to say there is a lot of interest in this region as it is producing most of the world's new minerals.  Hall A4 is where almost all of the Chinese dealers are set up. There are a lot of good stibnite and fluorite specimens here but little in the way of material from new finds from anywhere really. I found the same dealer - Hunan Bafang Mineralshop - selling a very few more of the stunning specimens of gem realgar with calcite from the Shemen mine that he had last year.  I picked out four pieces from the dozen that he had.  The rest had significant damage. They also had some new specimens of pyrite on fluorite from Jiang Xi.

A lot to choose from..
.

I did see Martin Jensen busy at work unwrapping roselite specimens.
I am not sure what the Moroccan dealer is thinking with that pose...
Maybe "Hurry up!" ?

Moroccan dealer Tresor de L'Atlas had a fine lot of 40 pieces of above average quality erythrite that I couldn't say no to. I bought them all from thumbnails to cabinet pieces.

Today was also a good day to pick up some high quality vanadinite specimens.  These are as good as ever and though there is still relative abundance the truly good quality specimens are scarce. These will not be around forever but while they are it makes sense to get a few.

Hall A5 is where most of the higher end dealers are setting up.  I will be there most of the day tomorrow on the hunt. One quick observation is that there is a huge supply of brookite specimens available right from Pakistan. The prices in Euros are stunning to say the least and the cause of  coronary distress when they are converted to dollars.

This show officially starts the 28th of October with the Dealer's Day. I will have a lot more on what's new in the next report.
