Munich Mineral Museum

My first day in Munich I spent moving about the city.  This year I decided to visit a mineral museum located at the Ludwig Maximilian University.  This school is home to mineralogical as well mathematical, meteorological and Physics classes.  To my misfortune the "Reich der Kristalle" display was closed. There was, however, a fine and free display of minerals available for viewing in the lobby area of the building so I took advantage of that.

The entrance to the Museum

Upon entering you are greeted with displays on either side of the lobby.  On the left side are minerals as well as displays of uses of minerals.

Some of the displays available for viewing.

The entrance to the Museum Reich der Kristalle is immediately
behind this display. Note the 2004 Munich Show poster on the wall.

The following a images of interesting specimens on display.

This large cabinet specimen from Pfalz has numerous crystals of Mochellandsbergite to 1 cm across.

This specimen from Nagyag had very large crystals of Nagyagite to 3 cm across.

This is another large cabinet specimen from Kuruman, South Africa
with numerous crystals of bright lemon yellow ettringite to 2 cm across.

This is a fine specimen of clinomimetite with crystals to 1.5 cm in length.

I apologize for the photo quality of this specimen.  This specimen
from Ilfeld has huge crystals of manganite to 5 cm in length.

This cabinet specimen of fluorite from Asturias, Spain caught my eye with
the dodecahedral face modifications colored violet on otherwise blue fluorite.

These two miniature sized specimenis had fine crystals of octahedral fluorite.  The
one on the left is covered with calcite crystals. Both come from the Harz Mountains.

These two specimens are both from Elba Island - tourmaline, quartz
and apatite on the left and tourmaline and quartz on the right.

This is a very interesting display dedicated to Schwarzwald.  FIne specimens of fluorite and barite
are on display here as well as other rarities such as scorodite and clinoclase to name just a few.

The next two images are of specimens from this collection.

This specimen has dark greenish blue crystals of apatite with violet fluorite.

Two very fine specimens of clinoclse from Grube Clara.

Last but not least is a fine specimen of benitoite and neptunite from the
Benitoite Mine in California. The top benitoite crystal is 2 cm across.
