Tucson 2017
Report 3

One of the best things about a large show like Tucson is reconnecting with friends.  In a show this long we literally spend hours and hours in conversations from Politics to fishing to minerals  to sporting events.  It is a lot of fun!  So here are some pictures of just a few of the people I spent some time with here in Tucson.

The first person is Ronna Jewett.  We became engaged during the Tucson Show this year!

A very serious Kiyoshi Kiikuni. Kiyoshi is noted for his stellar photography of minerals keysminerals.com .

A not so serious Jerry Rosenthal (left) and cigar chomping me. Jerry's got an incredible mineral collection in Santa Cruz, Ca.

Dan Kennedy (left) and Scott Werschky.

North Carolinian Geoff Krasnov setting up for the Tsumeb Special Event.

Ange Southwood along with Malcolm Southwood, Debbie Boyer and Daniel setting up Crystal Classics' booth for the Tsumeb Special Event.

Australian Penny Pennington helping fellow Australian Rob Sielecki setting up for the Tsumeb event.

Ignore that man behind the curtain!  Here is Jeff Scovil who got married on February 14th!

One of the highlights of the Tucson experience is the annual Spann/Fabre party at Casa Vicente.  This restaurant features authentic Spanish food with an emphasis on sea food.

At the entrance to Casa Vincente was this sign.

At the door was this happiest we've ever seen him - Jorde Fabre.

In the back these guys were whipping up yet another incredible batch of Paella (sounds like Pie ay ya) when you say it.
It was loaded with all sorts of INCREDIBLE tasting bits such as mussles, shrimp, chicken, veggies, rice and more.

The fellow in the center is responsible for the Paella.  Spaniard Jordi Pares (right) approves!

Gail Spann (left) was official hostess  - here with Herb & Moni Obodda.

Jim Spann (left) was also on hand to greet folks.

John White & Dave Wilber yucking it up for the camera.

Rolling Bar purveyor Tony Potucek.

Myself talking with San Francisco resident Joan Kureczka.

That was no more than just a small taste of the friends we saw here.  They numbered in the hundreds.

Tucson is also an odd place in that the town brain trust has made a concious decision to maintain a flavor of the 1950s with A LOT of surface streets.  It is a lot of stop and go but there are also a lot of places that have been maintained which carry on with that era.  There are also numerous murals all over town which evoke a special feeling of being somewhere that prides itself on its multi cultural heritage and placement in the Sonoran Desert.  There are probably well over 100 murals around Tucson and each is a superb work of art.  Here are a few.

This year we found a rental very close to the Hotel Tucson City Center.  It is situated in a small barrio near the train tracks.  We get to hear the trains sound their horns about every 15 minutes 24 hours a day.  You realy do get used to it!   The home we are staying was originally built in 1880 and has gone through several renovations.  It actually has a name - El Milagre del Barrio Anita - The Miracle of Anita Barrio.  Ronna did a little research and we found that the "miracle" occurred in the late 1890s when a woman living in the house crafted a tortilla and when it came out of the oven there was a likeness of Jesus.  What ever floats your boat or "gets you through the night is all right by me" as John Lennon once said.

Our rental on Anita Avenue in Tucson for 2017.

Okay one more report on some of the displays and my take on the show coming up.
