Tucson 2016

It has been a very busy last week for me here in Tucson.  One mini show and prepping for the next one tomorrow.  It is crazy times here.  Then there are the social events which are as important to this experience as are the minerals.  Time just zips by!  A group of dealers got together last year and decided to create a new venue at the Elk's Lodge on Oracle.  Cal Graeber, Leonard Himes, Unique Minerals, Well Arranged Molecules, IC Minerals, Geocrazy Minerals, Don Olson, Ronna's Treasures and Me (Trinity Mineral Co) set up for the three day show which ran from Jan 31 to Feb 2.  It was well received and we'll do it again next year.

Getting things set up on the 30th of January.

Opening day and you can see the line!

And they're off!

The best help money can buy!  Santa Cruz, CA collector Jerry Rosenthal catching a few winks...

The Westward Look show opened this past week and the rocks are as stunning as ever.  A turn in the weather to warmer conditions put everyone in a better mood.

Opening day at the Westward Look show and the place was packed!

Ian Bruce of Crystal Classics showed me a video with a new find of ludlamite from the Cabeza do Cachorro mine in Amazonas, Brazil. The crystals are dark lime green, large and lustrous.  Ias said he would have a lot more of these available at the Sainte Marie show in June as the bulk of the material is still in boulder form.

A 7.5 cm specimen of the new ludlamite find.

The day before the opening day of the Westward Look show I visited with Victor Yount.  Victor produced two flats of a new gold find in Brazil of stunning crystallized gold.  It turns out that Rudolf Watzl also had specimens of the gold available too.  The locality is Pontes e Lacenda, Mato Groso, Brazil.  The prices with the two dealers that had them were steep ranging from 2,000 for small pieces up to $500,000 for larger ones.

Here's a little background story about these golds. Talking to Victor, and several other gold dealers knowlegable about the find, it is apparent that the Brazilian state police (I believe it is the state police) have taken the area over and have applied - what is the best way to put it - pressure on the locals who are digging the gold to more or less hand it over or risk a nasty outcome.  What I heard was that all of the specimens in Tucson came through the hands of the Brazilian state police...

Gorgeous hoppered specimen also with Victor Yount.

This is the best specimen in Watzl's display of the new Golds.  He had $50,000 on this specimen.

Christophe Gobin always manages to come up with exceptional minerals and new finds.  This year he had a new find of cassiterite from the San Antonio Mine, Vilico, La Paz, Bolivia.  The crystals are dark brown, transluscent and with brilliant, iridescent luster.

A 6 cm specimen.

Gobin also had this interesting pyrite crystal on hematite matrix from Italy.

The dinosaurs are here again - quite a few years running now...

As I mentioned a bit earlier the social events make Tucson a special experience.  Wayne and Dona Leicht celebrated their 45th year here in Tucson with a Blue Bash at the their Tucson rental.  The teme of the main show is Blue Minerals so why not set the place a light with rich blue lighting?

An ice scupltered bar.  Note the curved tube which had measures of vodka poured into it and it came out in the glass below.

Is that really Dennis Beals?  It is!

Krystle Dorris and her mom wait their turn for the chilled vodka.

The one and only Tomek Praszkier as Papa Smurf.

I am preparing a large update of new specimens found here in Tucson.  I expect to have it up sometime around Thursday or so... No rest for the weary this time of year...

More to come from Tucson over the next week!
