Show Report 1    Show Report 2    Show Report 3

A few more things to report on here in the last installment.  French dealer Francois Lietard had some interesting fluorapatite specimens from the Sorey mine in Dara Pech, Kunar, Afghanistan. These are sort of bicolored with violet and greenish hues.  He had some solid violet colored specimens also from this find.  The violet specimens are non reactive under SW UV light. However, the specimens like the one pictured below fluoresce light yellow under SW UV light.

2.2 cm specimen with a cluster of gemmy fluorapatite crystals.

At the main show Dudley Blauwet had a new find of nepheline on hand.  These are coated with a thin layer of electric blue sodalite.   I did not obtain any of these specimens for an update so you can contact Dudley directly if you're interested.

4 cm specimen of nepheline   with sodalite.

Davis, California dealer Steve Perry was handling the Kent England collection.  There were only a dozen or so flats of material but it was worthwhile to get there early.  I found some very interesting specimens including a eulytine from Schneeberg, Germany, a stolzite and a raspite from Broken Hill, Australia and several others.

A 6.8 cm specimen with scores of raspite crystals and a few stolzite crystals.
One of the richest raspite specimens I have ever seen actually!

A section of a 5.3 cm specimen from Broken Hill with stolzite crystals.
There are also a few small crystals of raspite on this rock.

A close up of 5.5 cm specimen with eulytine crystals to 1 mm across.

Two dealers - Evan Jones and Valenzuela's Minerals had some very bright red cuprite specimens available from the Milpillas mine in Cananea, Mexico.  The crystals are drusy and somewhat poorly formed but the color is very bright red.  As with other cuprite specimens these look different under different light sources.  The red is most visible under incandescent lighting and sunlight.

A 4.5 cm specimen of quartz with the bright red cuprite..

Gene and Jackie Schlepp are still dispersing the last of the Marve Rausch collection.  I found several items to add to the next update including cabinet specimens of wulfenite with bayldonite from Tsumeb, Namibia; lustrous, deep inky blue fluorite from Grube Beihilfe, Halsbrucke, Germany; and a rhodonite from Franklin, New Jersey. But check out this stunning wulfenite from the Red Cloud mine from the famous Ed Over find in 1938!

No, I did not buy that one...

A specimen with crystals of wulfenite to 4 cm across !!!!

A 15+ cm specimen of deep blue fluorite from Halsbrucke, Germany.

A 15+ cm specimen of rhodonite var. fowlerite with calcite and franklinite from Franklin, New Jersey.

A 12.5 cm specimen from Tsumeb with canary yellow crystals of wulfenite
and numerous small and greenish blebs of bayldonite.

Collector's Edge had a new find of emerald from Zambia on hand.  Wow these are good but out of my league.  I did not purchase any of these but you can find them at their website.

A 3+ cm gem crystal of beryl var. emerald.

A 5+ cm crystal of emerald.

A 7+ cm crystal of emerald.

The theme this year at the main show was fossils.  Most of the displays were centered around that obviously so you'll not see much of anything here relating to that.   Most of the mineral displays looked a lot like previous year's displays also - don't get me wrong the MAD case was mind blowing

A whooped Wally Mann is reflected in the glass after setting up this case of stunners.

as were the Scott Rudolf and Keith Proctor cases (you can see most of the specimens in previous show reports) but I did find one case to take photos at and that was the Smithsonian Institution case with two interesting specimens.  A fine pyromorphite from Ecuador and a wittichenite from Australia - probably one of the finest in existence.

A few final thoughts here.  Mineral prices are all over the place.  You can find the same quality of material for $100 or $10000.  It really is kind of bewildering.  Also material such as the neon green fluorite from the Oranje River in South Africa have tumbled in price.  If you were one of the early buyers this is an example where it would have paid to wait.  Don't get me wrong, the best of the best from this find will always command top dollar but I saw three dealers literally blowing the material out.  Apparently this is a very large deposit which will produce specimens for a very long time to come.

Attendance was down a bit also this year.  But, many dealers reported brisk sales.  As usual, if you had quality material you had a lot of interest and buyers.  The economy is down but it is not dead by a long shot.

Ok that will do it for Denver 2009 for me.  I am already back home and will be posting the last of the new Denver Show specimens between now and Tuesday (Sept 22) night.  Once again I have to thank Marty Zinn and his crew and the Denver Gem and Mineral Society for their organizational efforts to bring all these great minerals to one place.

See you again here next year!
