Show Report 1    Show Report 2    Show Report 3

The trip out to Denver can be done several ways.  My favorite is to blast across northern California north of Mt. Lassen and then go through Reno and head toward Fallon on I-80.  From there it is US Hwy 50 across Nevada and Utah and then to I-70 which takes you all the way through to Denver.  It is 1250 miles or so and takes me 2 days to do it.

Typical view along Hwy 44 through Shasta and Lassen Counties in California.

The Nevada/California state line on US 395.

Typical view on US Hwy 50 - this one is 35 miles east of Fallon, Nevada.

Austin is about smack dab in the middle of Nevada.  It is an old mining town.

Eureka is about 1.5 hours east of Austin and is also an old mining town.

Ely is the last town of any sort on US 50 in Nevada.  Like the others it has a rich mining history.

About 30 miles from Ely you get a splendid view of Great Basin National Park's Mt.Wheeler.  One of the highest peaks in Nevada.

About 15 miles west of the Utah state line you can get a better view of the glacial influence on Mt. Wheeler.

The never changing view at the Utah-Nevada state line.

If you've never seen this part of the country it is quite expansive and empty for the most part.  There are a few towns sprinkled along the way once you leave Fallon.  The section of US 50 in Nevada likes to boast that it is the 'Loneliest Highway in America".  But I would suggest that the stretch from the Utah state line to the town of Delta, Utah is even more lonelier.  I counted only 9 cars heading the opposite way for 90 miles.

About 20 miles east of Green River, Utah there is a formation called the Book Cliffs.  They extend far into Colorado also.

The final decent into Denver and a wee bit of smog.

Ok enough on the Travel Log.  Time for rocks!

Brazilian dealer Luiz Menezes had some interesting minerals on hand at the show.   He had an interesting new locality for olivenite from Ibiajara, Bahia, Brazil. The specimens are gossanous and have abundant elongated, bladed to straw-like crystals of olivenite partially to completely covered with a mix of malachite and cornwallite. When is the last time you saw arsenates from Brazil of any kind???

A specimen with olivenite crystals heavily covered with malachite and cornwallite.

He also had a new find of twinned epidote from a new find in Dom Gaspar, Bahia, Brazil. The specimens are reminiscent of the Kenyan specimens seen 5 or 6 years ago in that they are generally opaque and have one or two faces with a frosted luster.

A specimen of two adjoined crystals of dark green epidote.

Mark Lasater of the Clam Shell had a small supply of a new find of fluorite from the Blanchard area.  This particular find was made by Brian Huntsman in what he called the Fish-Stick Pocket at the Bingham mine, Socorro County, New Mexico.  This locality has produced considerable fluorite in the past but no one has ever found it with these beautiful magenta colored centers.   Mark related to me that shortly after opening the pocket and collecting a small amount, the pocket collapsed.  This might end up being all there ever will be of these colorful fluorite specimens.

A specimen of color zoned fluorite from the new find.

Collector's Edge had some rhodochrosite from the Champion mine, Hinsdale County, Colorado.  The typical specimen is of thin rhombic crystals with light rose pink color.  The quartz matrix is loaded with various sulfides of copper, lead and zinc.

Two images of one of the rhodochrosite specimens I purchased from the new find.  This one is 8 cm across and has crystals to just under 1 cm across.

There will be a lot more to come in the next week so stay tuned for new finds from here in Denver, Colorado!
